Caring for the People Living in the Slums of Chennai, India

HIV/AIDS Prevention

NLWS provide HIV/AIDS education to slum women, adolescents and youth through collaboration with the International Alliance for the Prevention of AIDS (IAPA).

NLWS also implements HIV/AIDS awareness program among the sex workers. Saidapet and its environs are full of slums where high risk behavior activities occur frequently, especially among the sex worker and Aravanis population in the area.

NLWS contacts sex workers in both one-on-one and group dynamics. We make them aware of how to identify STIs they might have and refer them to further counseling and treatment.

NLWS often performs condom demonstrations and implement condom distribution programs. Condoms are procured at no charge from nearby NGOs.

NLWS does not only work with high risk populations. We constantly spread awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention among the slum women and youth.

Periodically NLWS conducts street plays and observe World AIDS Day and other programs connected with HIV/AIDS in collaboration with other NGOs already implementing HIV/AIDS programs in the city.
