Youth Programs |
|
| Youth living in the slums of Saidapet typically drop out of secondary school by 10th standard due to socioeconomic reasons. This break in education also breaks one of the strongest opportunities for the younger generation to improve the quality of life for themselves and their community. NLWS, which started as a free night tutoring center in a small hut for ten students, believes that education is the foundation for the new life we propose. We continue to believe in the importance of our night school program. For the free time the youth have, we are also developing a sports and fitness program, channeling the youth towards productive, leadership and team-building activities. |

Night School Our founder, Lakshmanan started giving back to the Saidapet community in 1992, by starting a free notebook distribution program. These were the roots of NLWS and the night school program, which still continues its notebook distribution program at the start of every school year. Currently, the night school is scheduled almost every night, alternating between Tamil, English, and Math education for age groups ranging from 1st standard to 10th standard. The four brick walls the night school is currently held in accommodates approximately 50 students that have been encouraged to come free of cost. Three volunteers currently coach the students, keeping them focused on their education. Approximately 70% of our night school graduates go on to university. Dance Group The dance program is the first step of our sports and fitness program. Like the night school, it is open to any interested member of the community. Rehearsals are held after the night school, also in the same brick building, and the group performs at charity events. HIV/AIDS and Health Education Our HIV/AIDS education program is currently run through our partnership with the International Alliance for the Prevention of AIDS (IAPA). Volunteers from IAPA also implement a general health education, helping NLWS achieve one of its main directives: improving the health standards of the slums. IAPA plans to strengthen its partnership with NLWS in the following years in terms of health awareness and accountability for that awareness. |
